The titles such as CEO, CFO, COO, etc. can also be referred to as the CxO titles. They are used by many large companies, and it can be difficult to see what the different designations cover. There are many c-suite titles, and the term C-suite is short for a company’s senior management and derives from the first letter of the titles at the highest management level.
The most common C-suite titles are Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Chief Sales Officer (CSO), and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Regardless of how they begin their careers, C-suite executives must demonstrate both technical competencies and a wide range of soft skills in communication, leadership, and strategic vision.
Smaller companies typically only need one C-suite executive. A small business may have people who manage key functions of the business, e.g. finance or marketing who do not have a C-level title.
CCO can stand for Chief Communications Officer, which is a communications manager. The CCO works with the company’s internal and external communications. We work with strategic decisions around the company’s overall communicative expression, and we work continuously to maintain and create communication that presents the company according to the strategic goals.
CCO can also stand for Chief Commercial Officer, who is the sales and marketing manager, where you work on the company’s reputation and brand. The primary tasks consist of developing commercial strategies that present the company brand. As a sales manager, you work – as the name indicates – to generate revenue for the company.
CDO stands for Chief Digital Officer
A Chief Digital Officer is a digital director. A CDO’s area of responsibility is to transform and translate traditional processes into more digital processes. Including uncovering the possibilities for implementing new, modern technology as part of improving the company’s earnings, or reducing its costs. CDO could e.g. be responsible for streamlining employees’ internal communication via a newly purchased digital platform.
CEO stands for Chief Executive Officer and is the managing director who is responsible for the management and administrative management of the organization. The managing director is at the top of the company. In many cases, the CEO is also the founder and drives the company’s purpose, vision and mission. The CEO will be responsible for connecting the company with the market and has the final say in budgeting and investment decisions. The main purpose is to manage the company’s strategies so that it achieves its goals. The ideal CEO should be a leader who provides guidance and resources to the team and removes obstacles.
CFO stands for Chief Financial Officer. The CFO is responsible for the company’s economic and financial planning. CFO Decides, among other things when and where to invest, and assesses risks with a view to increasing the company’s value. The CFO contributes with financial knowledge, and accounting and provides a general and analytical view of the company. In most cases, the CFO is also an advisor to the CEO in business development and strategic matters.
CHRO stands for Chief Human Resources Officer and is a personnel manager. The title can also be CPO (Chief People Officer) and is overall responsible for the company’s Human Resource Management (HRM). A CHRO works with management and HR, labor market policies, and tasks related to personnel management.
CINO stands for Chief Innovation Officer (sometimes called CIO), which means Chief Innovation Officer.
CIO works with modern technologies and innovative solutions. The purpose is to make the company competitive and strengthen its competitive advantages vis-à-vis the outside world.
CIO stands for Chief Information Officer and is an IT manager or IT director. The CIO takes care of the company’s systems at a strategic level. A CIO analyzes the benefits that new technologies can provide, identifies which technologies are most interesting to the company, and evaluates their operation.
CMO stands for Chief Marketing Officer and is the Marketing Manager. The CMO is responsible for marketing activities, which include sales management, product development, advertising, market research, and customer service. The CMO focuses on the interests of all departments to optimize marketing activities. Including planning, development, implementation, and monitoring of the general marketing strategy.
COO stands for Chief Operating Officer, which is equivalent to a deputy director. A COO is responsible for running the company. The COO reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and is often considered his right-hand man. In some companies, the COO is also known as the Executive Vice President of Operations.
Chief Product Officer which is a product manager. The CPO is responsible for the company’s products and processes. Overall, the CPO is responsible for manufacturing the products, product development, distribution, and purchasing. As a product manager, you can also be responsible for product development and for what a company must be able to offer in the future.
Chief Procurement Officer who is a purchasing manager. The duties of a CPO are within supply chain management, administration, and procurement of equipment and materials. It is the purchasing manager’s responsibility to reduce costs in connection with purchases, select suppliers, and supervise and participate in contract negotiations.
The Chief Sales Officer is the sales manager (director) responsibility for the company’s sales. A sales manager deals with sales and is usually the top manager in a sales department. A sales manager can both carry out sales work himself, or motivate and help Key Account Managers or sales consultants to sell a company’s services.
Chief Security Officer, which is a security manager (director). A CSO is a person responsible for the company’s security; thus both physical security, IT security, etc. A security manager is a broad management title, where the primary tasks can be very different depending on the company you work in. If, for example, it is a CSO in an IT company, then IT security is most likely the primary task for a CSO. If, on the other hand, you are the CSO in a manufacturing company, the primary tasks are probably the safety of employees and machines.
CSO can also stand for Chief Solution Officer, who is a solution manager. A solution manager is a person responsible for the development and delivery of business solutions within innovation or technology. In some companies, you can have a solution manager as an alternative to a product manager.
A Chief Technology Officer is a technology manager or technology director. The CTO oversees the development and proper operation of information systems from an execution point of view. In general, the CTO is responsible for the technical teams, and for implementing new strategies to improve the final product.
A similar role is the CIO position, as in some companies they share the tasks. The main difference is that a CIO focuses on information systems (communication workflow) with the aim of increasing efficiency, while a CTO is responsible for the technology strategy aimed at improving the final product.
CVO stands for Chief Visionary Officer, which is a development manager. CVO covers the more visionary and business-oriented area of the company’s overall strategy and objectives. This title is not yet used that much in Denmark.
CQO stands for Chief Quality Officer, who is a quality manager. The CQO is responsible for quality in a broad sense. This includes, among other things, responsibility within risk management, where the purpose is to anticipate, control, and avoid potential risks. In some organizations, the position is even referred to as Chief Risk Management Officer.
